EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY PLAN
TOPIC: | The Great Learning Mission – Learn Together, Win Together! |
CLASS / DURATION / PREPARED BY: | Grades 7- 9; 1 lesson; Prepared by: Zita Nichtová, English teacher, ZŠ ŠS Starý Tekov |
LEARNING TASK
Students take part in an active team challenge consisting of short, fun learning missions. They solve puzzles, answer questions, communicate in English and complete creative tasks. Through cooperation and movement, they discover that learning can be enjoyable and that everyone has something valuable to contribute.
The main question is: Can we learn more when we learn together?
GOALS ACCORDING TO THE GENERAL CURRICULUM
- To understand the importance of quality education and lifelong learning.
- To develop communication, cooperation, creativity and critical thinking.
- To practise solving problems in different ways.
- To recognise and appreciate individual strengths and abilities.
- To encourage active participation, mutual support and equal opportunities in learning.
General competences
- Students communicate in English, understand instructions, explain their answers and share ideas with teammates.
- Students work in teams, distribute tasks, support one another and respect different opinions.
- Students complete challenges, apply their knowledge in practical situations and reflect on how cooperation helps them learn.
Subject competences
- Students use English vocabulary, understand short instructions, answer questions and describe their solutions.
- Students use knowledge from different school subjects to solve puzzles, answer questions and complete practical tasks.
- Students recognise their strengths, encourage others and understand that mistakes are a natural part of learning.
Integration with other subjects
- English: Vocabulary, speaking, reading and following instructions.
- Mathematics: Logic puzzles, number patterns and calculations.
- Geography: Countries, capitals, maps and environmental facts.
- Science: Nature, animals and simple scientific questions.
- Physical Education: Movement-based challenges and teamwork.
- Civic Education: Fairness, cooperation and respect for others.
MATERIALS / EQUIPMENT
Task cards and envelopes, paper, pens and markers, a timer or stopwatch, a whiteboard, optional QR codes and smartphones or tablets, optional Kahoot, Wordwall or LearningApps, small paper tokens or stickers for completed missions.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: Find Your Team! ( 15 min.)
Students move around the classroom. The teacher calls out a category, such as animals, school subjects, countries or things we can recycle. Students quickly form groups of four by finding classmates who can name something from the same category.
The teacher introduces the mission:
“Today, your team must complete five learning challenges. You do not need to know everything – you need to think, cooperate and help each other!”
Activity 2: Five-Minute Mission Stations ( 10 min.)
Teams rotate through three stations, spending approximately five minutes at each. Each station contains a short challenge.
Station A – Brain Power
Solve three quick puzzles, such as a number pattern, a word riddle and a simple logic question.
Example: What comes next: 2, 4, 8, 16, …?
Answer: 32.
Station B – World Explorers
Answer geography and environmental questions.
Examples:
- What is the capital of Slovakia? (Bratislava.)
- Which gas do plants absorb from the air? (Carbon dioxide.)
- Name three ways to save water.
Station C – English in Action
Complete quick language tasks.
Examples:
- Make a sentence using the words learn, together, future.
- Name five school subjects in English.
- Explain the word education without using the word itself.
Teams earn one point for each completed task. They can ask for a hint, but must explain their answer.
Activity 3: The Human Knowledge Chain ( 10 min.)
Each team stands in a line. The teacher gives the first student a topic, for example “Things that help us learn” or “Ways to protect the environment.”
One by one, students say a new relevant word or idea in English. They cannot repeat an answer already given by their team.
Example:
Teacher: How can we learn?
Students: Books → Teachers → Practice → Questions → Experiments → Teamwork.
If a team gets stuck, it can ask another team for one hint. The aim is to build the longest meaningful chain, not to eliminate students who need more time.
For a digital variation, teams can submit their words through a live word cloud using Mentimeter or a similar tool.
Activity 4: The 60-Second Team Challenge ( 5 min.)
Each team picks one final challenge card and has one minute to prepare its answer.
Choose from:
- Teach It: Teach the class three new English words.
- Solve It: Solve a short riddle and explain the solution.
- Create It: Invent a new rule that would make learning more enjoyable.
- Act It: Mime a school subject or a learning activity for classmates to guess.
- Eco Idea: Suggest three things students can do to make their school more sustainable.
Each team presents its result in up to one minute. The class gives a round of applause after every presentation.
The teacher highlights the fact that different students can contribute in different ways: through language, logic, creativity, knowledge or teamwork.
Activity 5: Our Learning Victory ( 5 min.)
Each student completes an exit ticket:
- One thing I learned today was…
- One thing my team did well was…
- One thing I can teach someone else is…
The class reflects on the main message: learning is not only about getting the right answer; it is also about asking questions, trying new strategies and helping others.
REFLECTION and ASSESSMENT
Assessment methods
- Teacher observation of participation and teamwork.
- Points earned for completed challenges.
- Oral answers and team presentations.
- Individual exit tickets.
- Peer encouragement and feedback.
Assessment criteria
Criteria | Expected achievement |
Participation | Takes an active role in at least one challenge. |
Communication | Uses English to express ideas and answers. |
Cooperation | Helps teammates and respects their contributions. |
